FLOWSTATE
Project Type
Sports Photography
Date
April 2023
FLOWSTATE is an exploration into the abstract form of track and field through the lens. As a sports photographer, you are often forced into a box where you can only shoot crisp photos at high shutter speed. Since track is a very repetitive sport, I had to change the way I approached it as an artist.
I began to focus more on what the photo was making the viewer feel instead of what was actually happening. Being a runner myself, I have become very familiar with the idea of entering the “flowstate” (or runners high) while running. This is a feeling created by the increase of endorphins in the body, allowing you to feel like you can run forever. These photos were made to recreate this feeling for the viewer, along with all the other less desired feelings someone has while they are running (pain, fatigue, dizziness).
This project is just as much about my experimentation and exploration into the abstract world of photography as it is about track. The runners and the environment are simply my canvas and paint, and the camera is my brush.
